Family Psychotherapy
Does it feel like your family is struggling more than you would like? Family therapy can help!
Family psychotherapy is a form of talk therapy that helps the family to focus on improving their relationships. Each member’s background, personality, and coping styles affect every other family member and the family system as a whole. Any emotional or behavioral challenges that one or more family member may have affects the entire system. Although Dr. Gould may meet with parts of the family or individual family members in order to achieve the goals of the family, the focus always ties back to the family as a whole unit. If it’s clear that someone in the family system could benefit from their own individual therapy and they’re open to it, they’ll be referred to a different practice for that work.
A Few Words on Family Systems Therapy
The family is emotionally interconnected. No family member exists in isolation, and family members’ actions and emotions ripple through the entire system.
The family functions as a single emotional unit where change in one family member affects the whole system.
Family Systems Therapy considers generational, cultural, and societal influences on the family unit.
Focuses on improving how family members express needs and resolve conflicts.
Encourages individual family members to develop a stronger sense of self while remaining connected to the family.
Aims to improve communication, roles, and overall family functioning for greater harmony and resilience.

If you decide we are a good fit, we can schedule your intake appointment at the time of our consultation, or feel free to consider your thoughts and feelings and contact me to schedule the intake at a later time. The intake is where we will gather history, discuss the concerns that bring you to therapy, and establish the goals that you will work toward.

Typically, individuals and families initially schedule weekly sessions so that we can get to know each other well, explore the concerns you bring to therapy in depth, and establish goals for therapy. If you are requesting less frequent sessions from the start, we can discuss this at the time of the consultation. All session lengths are one full hour.
